In January the mercury still reads 30 °C. The north coast gets 200 mm rain per year, most of this falls between October and February. On the south coast it is much drier. The central part of Eritrea is mountainous. Here it is cooler and can even freeze in winter. July and August are the wettest months. To the west the landscape flattens out. Here the hottest months are April-June.
