The climate in Italy

For the most part Italy has a Mediterranean climate: warm summers (25-30 °C) and mild winters. Heading south the temperature rises and it gets drier. This is well a general impression. Due to its mountainous character, the Apennines are the backbone of Italy and run from the north (Genoa) to the south (Naples), and cause quite a few climatic variations at the same latitude. On the mountain tops it rains considerably. During winter, the snow can reach far into the south. On the coast it is much drier and sunnier. Most precipitation falls in Italy in autumn. In summer it is dry. Cagliari, in Sardinia, is the driest place in Italy. In winter the Alps and Dolomites offer plenty of skiing.
